 Mission Fact
Collision with a Comet - July 4, 2005! DEEP IMPACT is a radical mission to excavate the interior of a comet to launch in 2004 as part of NASA's Discovery Program. The Deep Impact mission will send a 350-kilogram (770-pound) copper projectile into comet 9P/Tempel 1, creating a crater as big as a football field and as deep as a seven-story building. A camera and infrared spectrometer on the spacecraft, along with ground-based observatories, will study the resulting icy debris blasted off the comet, as well as the pristine interior material exposed by the impact.

Overview of 2005 SERCH Funding Opportunity
The objective of this SERCH opportunity is to support education and outreach initiatives, within the SERCH region, that will increase the awareness and understanding of Earth-Sun system science, solar system research and universe exploration. SERCH is particularly interested in proposals for education and outreach efforts that support the vision and mission of NASA, NASA’s Vision for Education, the Science Mission Directorate (SMD) goals and the Support Network Forums.

Furthermore, SERCH is interested in proposals for education and outreach efforts that support the Broker/Facilitator operating principles, which include:

Establishing strong and lasting partnerships between the space science and education communities.
Highly leveraged programs/projects, relying upon a multiplier effect to reach as many communities, teachers, and students as possible.
Being inclusive of the broadest possible audience. Activities that foster the meaningful participation of underserved/underrepresented groups are encouraged.
