Resource Locator Overview

Simply put, SERCH acquired NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD) resource data - such as NASA education activities, NASA events, NASA partners, NASA Center locations - and combined it into one location. Then, in this one location, we enhanced the data by giving it a spatial element. SERCH mapped each piece of NASA data (thousands upon thousands of resources) so that the public could have a visual understanding of where NASA is working throughout the United States. And finally, we made the map interactive and published it on the Internet as the SMD Resource Locator tool!

SERCH began with a vision to make NASA data more useful and accessible to everyone. SERCH believed that the public would greatly benefit by an interactive map where they could 'zoom-in' to their geographic location and quickly see all of NASA's activities and contacts in their area - represented by dots. In addition to being able to see the NASA data in their area, SERCH wanted the public to be able to access the information behind the dots. Therefore, we built the interactive map so that the public could 'click' on the dots and see all of the detailed information about each specific NASA resource.
